Lily Turner (she/her) is an emerging contemporary dance artist based in Narrm/Melbourne, originally from Albury NSW, (Wirajudri). While completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) at VCA, Lily had the opportunity to delve deeper into her artistic interests, letting her curiosity and love of collaboration drive her exploration and understanding of dance. In 2023, Lily completed Secondment at FLING Physical Theatre (Bega) and received a government grant for the 'New Colombo Plan Resonating Spaces: The Two Island Project' for a cultural exchange in the Cook Islands (Rarotonga and Aitutaki).
In 2024, Lily collaborated with Gregory Lorenzutti in ‘PLANT NATION’, Melissa Toogood in ‘Ocean (an arrangement)’ and Chimene Steele-Prior and Luke George in the VCA 3rd Year Graduation Show ‘(Un) Tethered’. Lily is fascinated by the intricate relationship between movement and music and how they intertwine. A highlight of Lily’s choreographic journey includes the Yellowwheel Choreographic Season 'Trip the Light' (2024), where her work 'Gear + Tooth' premiered at Chunky Move with guidance from mentor Kyall Shanks, Artistic Director of Yellowwheel.
The Artist & her Practice
Lily is an up-and-coming dance artist whose work encompasses performance, choreography, design, and production. She fully engages in all aspects of creation and is always keen to learn new skills and disciplines to enhance her understanding as an artist.
Currently, Lily is fascinated by the intricate patterns and functions the body can exhibit at any moment. This curiosity fuels her exploration of improvisation, collaboration, and creative investigation. A manifestation of this is her ongoing project ‘Gear + Tooth,’ which she aims to further develop to uncover its complete possibilities and potential (see more).
Lily's strengths and interests are rooted in contemporary practices, including floor work, contact improvisation, and partnering. She focuses on the fluidity of sequential movement while contrasting different vibratory actions and continually hones her technique and physicality.
Lily aspires to navigate various environments within the dance industry and is currently looking to perform and create, connecting with her generation of dancers and innovators in the field.
